The second time I raced this (category 5), I saw the break-away start right from the whistle. Nobody seemed to think it would stick, and little effort was made to reclaim it. If I recall correctly, the escape was sealed just after turn 5, likely because the smaller and more nimble group stayed off their brakes.

This course will neutralize the strength of riders without solid handling skills, and braking through turn 5 will incur big costs. Keep your momentum and pedal through if you can. (Be wary of surface camber variations and expect scrapes.) Furthermore, it is common for the field to scatter after turn 2, causing additional energy losses.

Focus on the smoothest path possible through 3, 4, and 5. It goes without saying that if history repeats this weekend, the field must handle these corners efficiently if it is to catch break-away attempts. Ride smart here, and jockey for position elsewhere on the course.
