Leslie Jennings of Team CycleLife navigated a furious closing sprint to win the Women's Pro/1/2/3 race at Murad on Saturday. The team flexed mighty muscle, placing all four of its squad within the top 10, amidst a field stacked with Advil/Chapstick and Hub pros in town for CSC. Kate Flore (HPC p/b Altarum) finished 2nd, and Erin Silliman (Artemis) scored double honors with a third place overall and first among the Cat 3s. The event was shortened from five laps to four, when lightning proved as threatening to the field as Jennings' finishing kick. Ultimately the weather had its way, forcing the cancellation of the Men's 3 and Pro/1/2/3 events.
Nobody does Cat 4 like Route 1 Velo. Snicker at your own risk at a dynasty in the under-categories; R1V consistently races smartly as a team and ends up in the money, and are only separated from tight elite squads by about 10 hours per week of training, per racer. Think about that - they're having as much fun and enjoying as much success as Battley-Harley and Artemis Elite, but still have time to see their families, sleep in on off-days, and keep their jobs. On Saturday, Jose Nunez took top honors, followed home by R1V teammate Brigham Lumm. Drew Armstrong (NCVC) took the podium's third step. It was a sprint finish, breakaway free. We've almost forgotten what those look like.
Steven Erlemeier of Kelly Benefits / LSV won the Men's Cat 5 event. Not taking anything away from Steven, the notable outcome of that event is that 4 of the top 10 finishers were unattached. Better snap them up before R1V does.
Ainhoa Perez-Diaz (NVRC / Cardio Sports Lab) captured victory in the Women's Cat 4.
