MABRA Crowns 2008 Senior Crit Champs
Antietam Velo Club and the Hagerstown Criterium Challenged played host to the 2008 MABRA Senior Crit Championships on Saturday.
In the Men's 1/2/3 event, Battley Harley-Davidson was all over a 6-man break that stayed clear through the finish. In their third sweep this season, Battley white-washed the podium with Dave Fuentes winning the championship, followed by Chuck Hutcheson and Evan Fader.
Sarah Caravella of Richmond Pro Cycling won the Women's 1/2/3 event, but as RPC is not a MABRA-registered club, the Championship title and hardware were awarded to CycleLife's Leslie Jennings. The MABRA silver was won by an in-form Lorena Candrian of HPC, and Marjan Huizing of Kenda Tire won the bronze.
The day's shocker came when Route 1 Velo did not win the Cat 4 championship. Instead, the under-category specialists executed a perfect leadout to give Brandon Lumm the Cat 3 Championship. For good measure, Route 1 Velo's Matt Nowak also won the Cat 5 race. Squadra Coppi's Greg Strimbo is the 2008 MABRA Cat 4 Crit Champ.
Chick-in-Black Elizabeth Harlow (C3-Sollay.com) won the Women's Cat 3 Championship. The Women's Cat 4 race was won (again) by Ainhoa Perez-Diaz.
Additional Coverage:
- Haymarket Bicycles rolled 7 to the line in the 1/2/3 race. The Granfalloon mixed equal parts work with equal parts recovery, but it wasn't enough to dillute the Battley Harley cocktail. Bryan at On Cycling competed in his first 1/2/3 event in Hagerstown. He didn't take away any hardware, but is blinged out with learning, yo.
- Brian Fouche has some inside-the-pack perspective from the 1/2/3 race as well.
- Pete finished. Sometimes you need to hide victories where they're easy to find.
- Le Amateur Domestique has details on Route 1 Velo's Cat 3 strategy and leadout, on account of it was him doing the leadouting.
- So sayeth Kyle, "I very rarely yell but there was a lot of knuckle heads who could not ride a straight line if they were on a trainer."
- Stormyworld road-tripped up to Hagerstown from VA-land. A good time was had by all.
Looks like Super Dave is starting his sandbagging career again. (from the results on Hagerstown Crit Championships. He's downgraded to a CAT 4 again. It was so hard to get him out of the CAT4 12 or years ago. I even had to take a leave from racing so that I wouldn't have to compete against him.
Just having some fun with the typo. :)
