The Univest Grand Prix is perhaps the most famous race in our area that nobody seems to know about. Saturday's 100-mile road race is a UCI 1.2 event, meaning that it's more important than one of those crits in the industrial park not far from the airport.
Headlining the event are local squads from Immediate Mortgage / Artemis Elite and Battley Harley-Davidson. Artemis is sending Mark Warno, Ramon Benitez, Nathan Coleman, Michael Githens, SuperDave Osborne and Rick Norton into battle. The start list for Battley Harley-Davidson includes Yamil Montano, Brian Butts, Sean Barrie, Keck Baker, Ken Johnson and Matt Cooke. Yes, that Matt Cooke. Only it's not to be, as the UCI wouldn't ultimately grant a one-day release for Matt, a pro racer, to compete on a mixed team.
The various press releases for the event list some other squads like Garmin p/b Chipotle (Will Frischkorn is last year's winner), Amore e Vita / McDonald's, Kelly Benefits Strategies / Medifast, Tecos, Team Type 1, Jittery Joe's and others. But their presence there is interesting inasmuch as they're a yardstick for how our hometown heroes are going.
The race is in Souderton, PA, about a 3-hour road trip from the DC area. You could make a weekend of it and watch Sunday's crit in Doylestown as well.
