[All cyclists are experts, at least when it comes to our equipment choices. We know why we chose what we chose, and what we think of the product after we've been using it. GamJams Reviews channels that collective expertise - category by category - into a tidy package of articles designed to help all of us make better equipment decisions. Buying what pros get paid to use is one way to go. But the candid testimonial of fellow racers who paid out of their own pocket - that's an endorsement that really counts.]
This week's GamJams Reviews is on the best cycling gift received this year. If you want to add your own review, do it in the comments or on your own blog and throw a link in the comments.
- Underwear is always a great gift - often for both giver and recipient. A santa thong won't keep you warm, but a Verge Long-Sleeved Base Layer like the one BethBikes received sure will: "After testing the product in a variety of conditions, I was very impressed with the comfort, breathability, and warmth. It kept me warm, and not wet, in the cold. That has been hard for me to find previously."
- Sweet Home Algomaha got underwear too - a Nike Pro Thermal Baselayer. It's not cycling-specific, but he doesn't discriminate: "it's fitted tight and really warm. How warm? Into the mid-20s, I don't need anything else except a jersey. That's warm."
- Bring the bling. El Carne scored a Garmin Forerunner 305 wrist-mounted GPS unit, for cycling and running: "Its simple enough to use and the best thing about it, is the software. Its cool how you can map your training rides or runs. You can store and track all your workout history from your total mileage, avg speed, total elevation, to total calories burned etc.. You also have the option of toggling between bike mode, running mode or other sport."
- Ro Loves to Ride found a Road ID in her stocking: "I've been wanting one of these for a while and I was super excited to find one in my stocking ... now I don't have to carry my drivers license around with me!"
- FirstDropped can't decide which he likes best - his Louis Garneau Fast MTB helmet or the Cannondale Carve MTB shoes. Sometimes the best gifts aren't the ones that aim to bring our game up a notch, but just make it easier for us to keep on riding and racing in the first place: "I received several cycling related gifts this holiday season. Most were replacements for items I had worn out and needed desperately."
- Other great gifts aren't necessarily for cycling, but what exactly did you expect a cyclist to use them for? Take Flamenco Chuckwagon's new iPhone, for example: "The reason why it's a mint cycling gift is because when you take it for a ride, you have a mapping GPS, an MP3 player and a phone with you. Pretty freaking sweet. Also, I will be able to communicate with the missus when I go to Lost River Barn. Also, I will not get lost or stuck in traffic on the way to races. I always forget the damn directions. I am also going to take a picture of the epic Faema (long time cycling sponsor - check old pictures of Eddie M) coffee maker stuff that just got installed in the kitchen and send them to Jim, who will be filled with envy. So that's why the iPhone rules as a cycling Christmas present."
- Fatguy racer got a fresh homemade knit hat from his wife: "She did it in Latitude/ABRT colors. I wear the darn thing everywhere. It makes me look like a dork, but I don't care. I love this hat. And I love my wife, she's the best."
Next week: Hydration.
Here's my take... on my blog.
