Spencer Beamer (Team Mountain Khakis) won Pro/1/2/3 race on the first night of the 2009 Working Man's Classic on Tuesday. Dave Fuentes (Battley Harley-Davidson) was on a solo break for much of the race, raking in many of the events premes in the process. Late in the race Beamer and Jeff Buckles (Richmond Pro Cycling) escaped from the pack and began to reel him in. They caught Fuentes with about 3 laps to go and the trio held off the charging pack to the finish. Beamer crossed first, followed by Fuentes, with Buckles in third. Isaac Howe (Team Mountain Khakis) won the field sprint ahead of Todd Hipp (Battley Harley-Davidson).
The top 3 racers all represent powerhouse squads at the event, so the GC battle will heat up in tonight's event. Will an early escapee sacrifice GC hopes in exchange for a preme payday (made richer still by the sale of t-shirts by sponsor Cullop's Imports)? Can the Kazane bikes underneath the TMK and RPC racers sweep the podium? Will Fuentes wear one of the two pairs of GamJams socks he won last night? Tonight will tell.
Curtis Smith (Team Nature's Path / 3Sports) won the 4/5 event, and now leads the GC over Jonny Phan (Carytown Bicycle Company) and Grayson Cobb (Kazane Racing). In addition to bragging rights and cash, the 4/5 GC winner takes home a one-hour massage by Legends Salon and Day Spa. Legends is providing the same prize for the top Cat 3 in the Pro/1/2/3 event.
Tonight's race is on the same circuit as last night, but run in reverse.
