Sunday's 2009 Page Valley Road Race enjoyed the distinction of being the Road Race Championship event for both MABRA and VACA. Temps over 90 degrees and an exceptionally hilly profile ensured that the event lived up to its championship billing: winners on this day deserve the champ's jerseys they will wear in 2010 road race events.
The Men's 1/2 event saw Chuch Hutcheson (Battley Harley-Davidson) and Nate Wilson (Kelly Benefit Strategies / LSV Amateur) slugging it out over the final lap, right up until the finishing hill. Hutcheson pulled out of his pedal on the climb and Wilson took merciless advantage, surging ahead of the region's hottest racer. But Hutcheson clipped back in quickly, made up lost ground and then overpowered the LSV junior for the win. Jose Escobar (Battley Harley-Davidson) escaped from the remains of the shattered field to solo in for third. Of the 46 starters, only 19 finished.
The circuit took its toll on the Women's 1/2 race as well, with only 9 finishers. In the end, Erin Silliman (Artemis) was strongest on the day, capturing her second championship of the season, after winning the MABRA Crit Champs in Hagerstown earlier this season. Ainhoa Perez-Diez (NVRC / Cardio Sports Lab) continued her meteoric rise through the amateur ranks with a hard-fought 2nd place, followed by Leslie Jennings (Team CycleLife p/b Specialized) in third.
