Many Mid-Atlantic cyclocrossers showed up at Druid Hill Park in Baltimore, Maryland, on Sunday to punch their tickets for the first time this season at the fifth edition of Charm City Cyclocross, the second race in the MAC cyclocross series. The record fields of 125+ riders in several categories were met with ideal weather—albeit not for cyclocross purists that yearn for cold, mud and muck—and a fast challenging course.
The lower categories enjoyed morning temperatures in the mid-sixties and a slick course that demanded patience and power, attributes average cyclocross neophytes do not have in great supply. However, vim, vigor and an insatiable desire to pass riders at inappropriate times trumped inexperience, and hard fought battles took place as the course dried out and the temperatures rose.

By the time the elite men and women took to the course, temperatures reached the eighties and heat became a factor. The Women’s elite race quickly became a battle between six women with all eyes on MM Racing’s Maureen Bruno Roy, the Charm City Cycling duo of Laura Van Gilder and Dee Dee Winfield, and Rebecca Wellons of the Northeast Bicycle Club. They were joined by Human Zoom Cycling’s Kristin Gavin and Hub Racing’s Arley Kemmerer.
Bruno Roy is the current 30-34 U.S. National Cyclocross Champion and Van Gilder, even at 44 years old, remains one of the fastest women in professional cycling. The safe money was that one of these women would cross the line first. For it to be Bruno Roy, she would have to get rid of Van Gilder somewhere out on the course. Coming in to Charm City’s long finishing stretch anywhere near the born sprinter was almost certain to be a losing proposition.
Despite attempts by Bruno Roy to separate herself from the front group, it was Van Gilder that had the legs in the last half-lap to pull away from the front group and finish alone, unleashing a trademark show of power on the finishing stretch to seal the deal. Bruno Roy finished second and Wellons out-kicked the remaining survivors to claim third.Van Gilder and Bruno Roy also went 1-2 in Saturday’s Nittany Lion Cross, the MAC series opener. Dee Dee Winfield rounded out the podium in that event.
For the men’s race, the favorites had also done battle the day before in Pennsylvania. Team Fuji’s Davide Frattini came away with the win in that event with Cycle-Smart’s Adam Myerson coming in second. At Charm City, a leading group of six developed after a couple laps with Frattini doing most of the pace-setting. It looked like this race would play out similar to the women’s race until Frattini crashed with about five laps left. Myerson quickly took advantage of the Fuji rider’s mistake and surged ahead.
Unlike road racing, where attacking after a crash may look like bad sportsmanship, in cyclocross it is fair play and a tactical opportunity that must be seized. Myerson was able to do just that and stayed clear of his pursuers for three laps before it all came back together.
Coming in to the last lap, Frattini was able to establish a gap over the lead group and take the victory for the second day straight. La Bicicletta’s Mike Garrigan slotted in to the second finishing spot with Myerson ending up third.
For next week, the Mid-Atlantic cyclocross focus will be on the Ed Sander Memorial Cyclocross, the MABRA season opener. Registration for the September 27 race is still open here. The MAC series takes a couple weeks off before resuming October 17 in Delaware for Granouge Cross.
