As much as we'd like to do it, it's hard for many people to make a semi-spontaneous big-ticket purchase. Rare is the racer who can walk into a shop and unflinchingly pay retail for a set of Zipp wheels because they felt like their breakaway effort could have been easier with better wheels.
So, most of us look at the offseason to make improvements in bikes or gear. A little bit of budgeting and saving can that purchase a little easier (plus, maybe you'll have time to negotiate a deal of some sort).

I've been saving up for a new motivation machine. My kept fluctuating all year because the meter was broken. They cost a few friends and a new outfit. I'm paying for it right now. It appears to be working, I did some good riding recently.
