While you were busy hitting the delete key, I was busy living vicariously as a lonely list lurker. Here's a quick look at what you might have missed on the various cycling list-serves this week.
In MABRA-land, there were quite a few hot topics and a lot of important announcements...
- One of the hottest political topics in recent days centered on some questionable attitudes from Fairfax County leaders as to how the county ought to incorporate bicycle access, lanes, and paths into their master transportation plan. Read the story here and exercise your civic right to voice your opinion.
- Though the snow is still piled high and the winter winds are still howling, the first race of the season has begun: the "late night point and click race" to get registered before your category closes! The following races announced their planned pre-registration openings:
Tyson's Corner Circuit Race -- Sunday, April 11 -- Registration Open
Jeff Cup -- Sunday, March 28 -- Registration Opens: March 1 at 9:00 a.m. (Flier to be posted soon on Bikereg.com)
Downtown Smithfield HAMmer Fest Criterium -- Saturday, April 3 -- Registration Open
540 Cycling Vint Hill Classic -- Saturday, March 20 -- Registration Open
- The folks at Team DBB/Deep Blue wanted everyone to know that the Wilmington Training Series is a "go" for this weekend. Registration is open and any changes will be announced on the list-serve.
- Finally, while everyone knows there are occasionally some acrimonious debates, this week started with an ongoing kerfuffle about how we can get DC to plow Hains Point for us. As part of this debate, someone finally made me laugh out loud: Jeff Anderson asked if MABRA could buy one of these. I laughed because we're cyclists and we all know MABRA won't buy one. We'll buy two or more and immediately start lining them up for some insane snow races around Hains Point; Chuck Hutch would probably drive one and grin maniacally while he finds a way to make it go faster than anyone else's...
On the VA Cycling list-serve, there was a little less action. Two items, however, did stick out...
- Hometown pros, Richmond Pro Cycling, got some good press last week in the Richmond Magazine. This non-profit team has the unique and admirable mission of developing young, talented cyclists into community leaders. They give back to the community in the form of service hours spent tutoring local schoolchildren and other related projects that benefit those who need it the most.
- There was some discussion of the recent changes in the Virginia State BAR categories and how they were or were not designed to match the MABRA BAR categories. Folks should check out the details of the VA BAR here and e-mail their questions and concerns to the BAR Coordinator.
Got any comments, interpretations, re-interpretations, or mis-interprations? Send them to me; I've got nothing better to do than to sit in my darkened room and live vicariously as a list-lurker...
