While you were busy hitting the delete key, I was busy living life as a lonely list lurker. Here's what you missed on the regional cycling list-serves this week...
This was a busy week across MABRA as folks got some important points out there and weighed in on some heavy issues:
- First off, the BAR standings now include team standings. They are updated through Fort Ritchie and Leonardtown but do not include Poolesville or Murad. Dave Harrell promises to do them very soon after he gets a little sleep.
- There was some misinformation about the prize list for the Masters 35+ and 35+ 3/4 events at BikeJam/Kelly Cup this weekend. The fields are raced together but scored separately and both have payouts: 35+ is $300/8 deep; 35+ 3/4 is $200/6 deep. So go for it; free lunch is on the line for everyone.
- There was a lot of discussion about doping, folks who talk about doping, and folks who talk about folks who talk about doping. Most of these threads were instant "delete fodder," but the official consensus seems to be that we don't like dopers. There, that was easy and should settle it. Now, everyone competing against me this weekend should demonstrate solidarity against performance enhancers by posting absolutely mediocre performances and making it clear that you are a clean racer; if you see me off the front, I'm not breaking solidarity, I'm probably just moving up to take a wide-angle picture of the drug-free peloton.
- The big topic of the week, however, was "what to do about the Tack Saboteur at the Leonardtown Criterium." By now you all know the story; it's garnered national attention and will undoubtedly result in those responsible being brought to justice. My instinct is to make a few sharp remarks about the whole issue and to make light of this tacky behavior with some bristling words of my own. But, frankly, this is a seriously thorny issue and any pointed comments would only dull the impact of this discussion and goad others to contribute their own barbs on the list-serve...
- Like the idea of a Gran Fondo? How about the reality of one right here in VA? Take a look at the Alleghany Gran Fondo registration info and get ready to enjoy some fully supported, electronically timed, and well fed miles of climbs and country roads in the Alleghany Highlands on July 10th.
- Is the highlight of your Saturday night pretending you have something cool to do when, in fact, you are actually logging time with the Hogan's Heroes Marathon? Why not give track racing a try? This weekend is the start of the Carytown Bicycle's Saturday Nights Sprints at the Southside Speedway. Check out the flyer: it has a devil on it (so you know it's a helluva good time).
