Sjoberg Overtakes Netzer for Cat 3 Cup Lead in Page Valley, Leads by Single Point

Brian Sjoberg (Bike Doctor) found himself in a slightly different competitive position headed into the weekend's racing at Page Valley. Instead of aiming to beat everybody, he was focused on just beating one guy - Celerity Cycling's Dan Netzer. The two of them were tied on points, facing Saturday's challenging Page Valley Road Race and Sunday's selective Luray Criterium, both of which were part of the Cat 3 Cup p/b Mountain Khakis. Also at stake was the team competition, which Celerity Cycles led, holding a slim margin over GamJams / November Bicycles, Bike Doctor and Haymarket.

Though tied on points, Netzer wore the leader's jersey in the weekend's first race at Page Valley by winning the previous weekend's Shenandoah Time Trial. He got the better of Sjoberg again on Saturday, opening a slim 2 point lead with a third place finish. Sjoberg crossed the line in fourth. Patrick McKeegan (HPC/List) and Ben Frederick (Team Traveller) took the top 2 spots on the Page Valley podium.

Sjoberg took his revenge in Sunday's Luray Criterium, springing free from the pack to finish second behind Team Traveller's Ben Frederick. In a race of attrition, Netzer showed no signs of atriting, following Sjoberg in for third. The one place difference between the two was worth 3 points in Sjoberg's favor, and he retook the lead with 69 points, to Netzer's 68. After drilling it all weekend, Ben Frederick (Team Traveller) has moved up to third spot with 39 points.

In the team competition, Celerity Cycling enjoys 9 points of breathing room over Bike Doctor. GamJams / November Bicycles sits 12 points further adrift in third.

Saturday August 20th is the final event in this year's Cat 3 Cup p/b Mountain Khakis - the punishing Appalachia Visited Road Race in Rowlsburg, WV. With prizes going three deep in both the individual and team competition there are still 12 racers and over 10 teams capable of earning a podium spot next weekend.

Netzer and Sjoberg Head into double Cat 3 Cup weekend in Page Valley, Tied Again

Dan Netzer of Celerity Cycling p/b Brooks Systems took the top spot at the Shanendoah Time Trial Saturday putting him back in the pants and giving him the right to wear the leaders jersey in the GamJams Cat 3 Cup p/b Mountain Kahkis. Brian Sjoberg of Bike Doctor managed to finish second thirty two seconds behind Netzer, tying him with fifty points. The tiebreaker goes to Netzer by virtue of his victory so he is eligible to wear the leader's jersey headed into the double race weekend in Page Valley. 

In the team competition, Celerity Cycling p/b Brooks Systems has surged into the lead with seventy-four. GamJams/November Bicycles sits in second with seventy-two points by virtue of Daryl "Wrong Way" Grissom's third palce finish in the Shenandoah TT. Bike Doctor are just six points back in third and Haymarket Bicycles drops to fourth with sixty-four points.

The competition is entering the home stretch as both the Saturday and Sunday events in the Tour of Page County will score points in the GamJams Cat 3 Cup. With twice as many points up for grabs over the two events, 16 riders and 10 teams are within striking distance of the podium. Prize payouts go 3 deep in both the individual and team standings. And these prize payouts of which I speak are provided by Mountain Khakis, November Bicycles, DzNuts, Soigneur Embrocation, Hoopskinz, VeloShine and GamJams.

Pre-registration closes at noon on Wednesday. As an added bonus the Page Valley Road Race is the senior championship road race for both MABRA and VACA; as well as the age-graded championship for VACA. It is also common knowledge that Page Valley promoter Chris Gould is a stand up guy, so it's worth racing at Page Valley this weekend even if you've lost your scintillating form and don't currently have good sensations in the legs.

Sjoberg Pulls Pants Back on at Lost River; Netzer Wants them Back at Shenandoah TT

Despite temperatures approaching the triple digits, plenty of racers turned out ready to sweat the hills at NCVC's the third edition of the Lost River Classic p/b Columbia Gas in Mathias, West Virginia. The win was taken by Matthew "won't be unattached for long" Phillips who was able to put some distance between his rivals on the last climb and score his first points in the GamJams Cat 3 Cup p/b Mountain Khakis. Ben Frederick of Team Traveller and Matias Palavecino of Snapple Cycling Team rounded out the podium. Brian Sjoberg re-captured the lead from Dan Netzer (Celerity Cycling p/b Brooks Systems) in the individual competition by placing fifth, increasing his tally to thirty-eight points.

GamJams/Novemeber Bicycles narrowed Haymarket Bicycles' lead in the team competition to a single point as Paul Rades placed sixth. Bike Doctor is now within two points of third place Celerity Cycling p/b Brooks Systems and a scant eleven points off of first. Robb "i will get better at time trailing i will get better at time trialing i will get better at time trialing" Hampton aims to close the gap with a strong showing at this Saturday's Shenandoah TT, the next race in the Cat 3 Cup. Hampton's Bike Doctor teammate Sjoberg is glad for the help in the team competition, but admits that keeping the leader's jersey at Shenandoah won't be easy. "Dan N can time trial like a mad man," he lamented.

Registration for the Shenandoah TT closes on Thursday at 10am. For those not chasing Pants Points, there are events for USAC categories, age-graded classes and TTT options, including a mixed doubles TTT for couples aiming to spend a romantic weekend getaway, suffering together in Page County.

Celerity Cycling Puts on a Good Show at Franklin Road Race

This weekend's Franklin Farm Road Race was the stage for the latest installment of the GamJams Cat 3 Cup p/b Mountain Khakis.  Mitch Hunt of Fat Frogs Racing took the honors and scored his first points in the competition, as did the third place finisher Thomas Grinnan (Carytown Bicycle Company). Other notables included Frank Cundiff of Celerity Cycling p/b Brooks Systems who took second and moved up to ninth in the competition, Terry Turner (HPC / CBC) who placed fourth to move up to fourth.  Leader's Jersey wearer Dan Netzer retained his jersey by taking eighth Place increasing his tally to thirty-five points to break the tie with Brian Sjoberg of Bike Doctor who was busy winning the Giro di Coppi but earning no Cat 3 Cup points in the process.

Cundiff and Netzer not only promoted the race but moved Celerity Cycling into third in the team competition, nine points off of Haymarket and three from Gamjams/November Bicycles.

The Road tilts up this weekend as the Gamjams Cup Gamjams Cup p/b Mountain Khakis moves to the Lost River Classic Road Race presented by Columbia Gas. Sjoberg has designs on reclaiming the jersey at Lost River, and then holding it through the end of the season. "I know I will most likely lose the leadership this weekend but will hopefully be able to contest it at Lost River, Shenandoah and Page County," said the Bike Doctor strongman in advance of the Franklin Road Race. With 9 riders within striking distance of the lead, Sjoberg better bring his climbing legs to West Virginia.

Pre-Registration for the Lost River Classic closes Tuesday at 8pm (tonight).

Netzer and Sjoberg share Cat 3 Cup lead going into Franklin Omnium

The Church Creek Time Trial and RGS Title / Prosperity Mortagage Reston Town Center Grand Prix were the latest whistle stops on the GamJams Cat 3 Cup p/b Mountain Khakis, and witnessed two lead changes in two days.

First up in the double barrel weekend was the Church Creek Time Trial, the first test against the clock in the competition. Dan Netzer from Celerity Cycling won the day with a scorching 53:36, putting him level with Jonathan D’Alba (Schuylkill Navy Racing) at the top of the standings for the points, but putting him in the lead in the tiebreaker thanks to his winning the last event. Brian Sjoberg of Bike Doctor took third with a 55:53 putting him just two points behind Netzer at the end of the day.

Both Netzer and Sjoberg came out again the next day for the RGS Title / Prosperity Mortgage Reston Town Center Grand Prix, hoping to add to their totals.  The day was won by Terry Turner of HPC/CBC however, who brought his sprint and himself up to seventh place in the standing with the win. Netzer managed to gain two points by finishing ninth and Sjoberg gained four points in seventh, thereby putting them equal at the top of the table with thirty-two points. Sjoberg earns a pair of Mountain Khakis and a leader's jersey for his efforts and is the official leader since he beat Netzer in the most recent Cup event. However, if Sjoberg does not race this weekend's Franklin Road Race, Netzer may wear the leader's jersey there since he already owns it and he's promoting the race and race promoters can wear whatever they damn well want.

The team competition saw GamJams/ November Bicycles narrow the gap to first place Haymarket to just 6 points. Sjoberg's points in both events brought Bike Doctor into third place 11 points from second.

Double Points at ToWC puts D'Alba in the Cat 3 Cup Pants

Jonathan D'Alba of Schuylkill Navy Racing used a dominating performance winning both the Prologue and Bonesboro Time Trial at the Tour of Washington County powered by SRAM and propel himself to the overall victory in the Tour of Washington County. D'Alba also finish fourth in the Williamsport Criterium to finish the event fifty-five seconds up on John Nelmes of Scimmie Veloci Cycle Club, with James Johnson of Annapolis Bike Racing Club rounding out the podium. D'Alba now leads the GamJams Cat 3 Cup p/b Mountain Khakis with thirty points, and can pair a pair of Moutain Khakis with a Primal Leader's jersey going into this weekend's racing.

GamJams / November Bicycles rider Callum Ingram had retained the leader's jersey after a strong finish in the Hagerstown Kickoff Criterium and now sits in second with twenty-seven points. Ingram's closest competition and former wearer of the pants Darion Fleming managed eighth in the Kickoff Criterium and now sits in sixth place overall with twenty two points. Flemming's teammate Daniel Villaflor-Drumright moved up on a strong 5th place stage race finish to take 3rd place in the standings with twenty-six points.

Bike Doctor's Brian Sjoberg swept both the Kickoff Criterium and the Williamsport Criterium as Bike Doctor put on a clinic in Sunday's race with his teammate Todd Bickling taking second. Sjoberg brought himself up to nineteen points and seventh place in the Cup standings with the effort.

Haymarket managed to extend their lead in the team competition to nine points over GamJams / November Bicycles on the strength of Villaflor Drumwright's finish and Fleming's additional points. GamJams / November Bicycles were able to extend the distance to third place Clean Currents p/b Don Beyer Volvo on Ingram's points in the kickoff crit and Zach Rogers' ninth place overall.

The GamJams Cat 3 Cup p/b mountain Khakis continues with two chances for Pants Points this weekend. Both Saturday's Church Creek Time Trial and Sunday's RGS Title / Prosperity Mortgage Reston Town Center Grand Prix are Cat 3 Cup events. Ingram dons Leader's Jersey and Mountain Khakis as Cat 3 Cup heads to Washington County

With 192 cup points available the upcoming Tour of Washington County Kickoff Crit and ToWC Stage Race (with double points), this weekend represents the queen weekend of the GamJams Cat 3 Cup p/b Mountain Khakis and promises to significantly change the standings.

Callum Ingram of GamJams / November Bicycles moved up the table after his third place finish at Ride Sally Ride, trailing only upgraded rider Tony Abate for points. Callum will be donning the Primal leaders Jersey as well as a new pair of Mountain Khakis going into the weekend, and will have to fight hard to avoid being stripped naked by Darion Fleming (Haymarket Bicycles). Fleming trails by only 2 points and missed Ride Sally Ride due to a crash at the previous weekend's Tour of Somerville. He'll be racing for Pants Points and the jersey off Callum's back at both Friday's Kickoff Crit and Saturday and Sunday's ToWC.

GamJams / November Bicycles now only trails Haymarket Bicycles by four points in the team competition with Clean Currents P/B Don Beyer Volvo moving up to fourth on the heels of Aaron Horvath's win at Ride Sally Ride.

But the Cat 3 Cup is far from a 2-man and 4-team race. The double points on offer at the Tour of Washington County could put any racer or team into the driver's seat - a seat made all the more comfortable in the sturdy canvas of a pair of Original Mountain Pants.

Fleming Pulls on the Pants in Cat 3 Cup after BikeJam and Tucker County Weekend

19-year-old Darion Fleming (Haymarket Bicycles) now wears the Pants in the Cat 3 Cup presented by Mountain Khakis. Even though lycra doesn't match with the sturdy canvas in Moutain Khakis' products, Fleming will adorn the Primal leader's jersey at this weekend's Ride Sally Ride Cat 3 Cup event. His 4th place finish at BikeJam earned him enough Pants Points to slot into 2nd behind the since upgraded Tony Abate. Thomas Mackay (C-3 Athletes Serving Athletes) won at BikeJam and moves into a tie for 4th in the Individual Standings.

While Pants Points flew in Baltimore, Paul Rades (GamJams / November Bicycles) was chasing down some of his own at the Tour of Tucker County. His win in the grueling gravelly road race moves him into a tie for 4th with Mackay, Dan Netzer (Celerity Cycling p/b Brooks Systems) and Rodney Kaufmann (Millersburg University).

Fleming's win also moves Haymarket Bicycles to the top of the team competition, where Danile Villaflor Drumwright is also throwing up some points. District Velocity p/b Bicycle Pro Shop follow close behind, owing all to Sexy Tony's scintillating early season form. GamJams / November Bicycles chases wheels into third, thanks to points scored by Rades, Callum Ingram and Zach Rogers.

There is plenty of Cat 3 Cup racing left, with this weekend's Ride Sally Ride followed by the Hagerstown Tour of Washington County Kickoff Criterium, the Tour of Washington County Stage Race and then the RGS Title / Prosperity Mortgage Reston Town Center Grand Prix. And that's just June.

Abate Defends Cat 3 Cup Jersey from the Front, but Upgrade puts Netzer in the Pants

District Velocity’s Tony Abate did the GamJams Cat 3 Cup leader’s jersey proud by winning the Fort Ritchie Criterium earlier this month and extending his lead in the individual competition. "Free pants are my favorite thing," Tony remarked, calling his Mountain Khakils leader's pants his "go-to for everything now." Tony showed the strength he has displayed all season to whip the field around the technical course.  Second place was taken by Haymarket’s Darion Fleming who has frequently joined Tony in his attenpts to escape this season.  Darion’s Teammate Jose Nunez moved up to second in the individual competiton with a strong third place finish.

Haymarket also made a strong entrance into the team competition with three different riders scoring points so far in the competition, though they have not yet tallied enough points to overtake District Velocity Racing p/b Bicycle Pro Shop who owe all their points to Abate.

Both Abate and Nunez have since upgraded to Cat 2. While they retain their leadership positions at the top of the individual standings, they can accumulate no further Cat 3 Cup points. The leader's jersey passes to Dan Netzer (Celerity Cycling p/b Brooks Systems) going into this weekend's racing.

Cat 3 Cup competition continues this weekend with two separate events on Saturday May 28th - BikeJam in Baltimore, MD and the torturous Tour of Tucker County in West Virginia. The former presents an opportunity for crit specialists to shine on the technical BikeJam course and rack up some individual and team points, while the Tour of Tucker County courts the skinny climber dudes coveting some Pants points.

Abate Wears the Cat 3 Cup Pants (and Leader's Jersey) into Fort Ritchie Criterium

The GamJams Cat 3 Cup p/b Mountain Khakis continued with last weekend's Meadows Farm Circuit Race. Richmond Velo Sport and Team Whole Foods laid out a picturesque, highly technical, and fast course.
The race started cold but the competition heated up quickly.  A group of four riders was able to escape early in the race and build a large gap over the field. The final sprint to the line was won by Dan Netzer of Celerity Cycling p/b Brooks Systems by a Wheel over Tony Abate of District Velocity Racing p/b Bicycle Pro Shop. Tony can take some consolation however as he will go into this weekend wearing the pants and donning the new Primal leaders jersey.

GamJams November Bicycles maintained it’s lead in the team competition despite not scoring any points. Both Celerity Cycling and Richmond Velo Sports made strong entries into the competition by placing multiple riders in the top 10.

The GamJams Cat 3 Cup p/b Mountain Khakis continues Saturday at the 4th Annual Fort Ritchie Classic Criterium p/b Corporate Office Properties Trust COP.
