From time to time, we here at GamJams World Headquarters and Low-Velocity Wind Tunnel take a break from investigative journalism and product testing to enjoy a doppio in our writers' lounge. This week, we invited the MABRA Officials over for a shot and a chance to talk about fortune and glory...
GamJams: So let’s start with the obvious stuff. You like to officiate races. Why? I mean, that can’t really be fun, can it?
Mimi Newcastle: Sure it can. But that could be the same perspective that leads me --a non-climber -- to refer to climbing a hill as fun, usually with the qualifier "fun in a sick cyclist sort of way." Yes, there are times when it isn't fun, nothing is fun all the time, but seriously, if it wasn't fun, I wouldn't do it.
Robin Meidhof: But it is also the one way I can give back to the sport. Sure, it’s not so much fun when the temps are below 40 or the weather is dreadful. This is why we love, love, love those promoters who supply us with heaters or extra tent coverage!
Kevin Long: Well, the part I enjoy the most is meeting riders and family in a setting that otherwise I would not get to meet these people. The competition and watching riders grow as they progress in abilities, and cheering them on to go faster is also great fun.
GJ: And you get paid, right? What do you do with the huge piles of cash thrown your way?
Lisa Salerno: Huge piles of money, eh? Most of the time, what I make goes to paying the dog sitter. It’s really about the sport and the camaraderie.
Wayne Lerch: Of course, you must mean after the armored car escorts us to the bank? Let me think, after putting gas in the car, stuff I don't need like uniform's, stop watches, pens and paper that write in the rain, bug spray, sunscreen, food for those 9 hour days, I can usually go out and buy a can of Spam.
KL: Maybe I’m different, but I just buy more motorcycle "stuff"!
