Where Phil Liggett might say a certain rider "is in a spot of bother today," Bob Roll keeps it real and puts it in terms real American riders and racers understand, "they are dying like dogs in the gutter out there today." Bobke is truly an icon in the world of American cycling. This weekend you have the chance to meet this icon, ride with this icon and even get dropped by this icon if you want to at the St. Michaels Historic Century Ride hosted by the good folks at the Bike Doctor.
The ride starts at 8:00 a.m on this Saturday, September 18th, in St. Michaels, MD. Riders will get to enjoy fully staffed and fully stocked aid stations every 20 miles (or so) along the century route through historic Talbot County. If you are doing the full century, you'll get to enjoy an extended rest stop to be ferried across the Tred Avon River to Oxford. So this is truly a "social, off-season, enjoy yourself and remember why you started riding in the first place" sort of ride. Sure, you can hammer if you want, but it's going to be more fun just to sit back and let the ride come to you. Besides, you'll want to get some pearls of wisdom from Bobke and you can't do that if you're on the attack!
Registration is open now and all pre-registrants get a commemorative tee-shirt (which you don't get at most crits, right?). So, even though it may not be bikereg.com (and I know that's going to annoy some of you out there!), it's still worth the effort to get some of your friends together and enjoy the transition from racing to riding for a while.
